The song shot up to the number one position on Billboard’s Top 100. It received airplay on all types of radio stations from hip-hop and urban, to mainstream pop, to MTV. The album was eventually nominated for a Grammy Award, however, did not win.

“I can’t say that I’m not disappointed,” he told Livewire afterward. “I tell you I’m happy to have been nominated for the Grammy because there’s a lot of extra publicity and press just being nominated. So, ya know, I’m very happy just to have been nominated.”

But he did win the first of three Grammy Awards later on. Ludacris received his first after combining with Usher and Lil Jon on the hit single “Yeah!”

The funny and outspoken rapper also received a lot of extra press and publicity when he became involved in a war of words with conservative talk show host Bill O’Reilly, who criticized the rapper for being a poor role model for young people. O’Reilly also criticized Pepsi for hiring Ludacris to promote its products.

Ludacris responded to O’Reilly and his other critics in a very harsh, dark, and gritty song and music video that was very different from the funny and colorful songs that his fans were accustomed to.

The song was called “Blow It Out,” and the rapper even mentions O’Reilly by name. While it wasn’t one of his finer moments, Ludacris made sure he got his message across to Mr. O’Reilly.
